Artist Statement
Niamh’s work focuses on identity, queerness and self-invention. By exploring the complexities of the self, their work follows a journey of an evolving identity, self-exploration and creating a future self.
Niamh has ongoing research into spies, alter egos and fading entertainment (from Victorian pantomime to old Hollywood). They are interested in how identities can be invented and performed.
With the struggle to represent the self, they create other characters using makeup, masks, costumes, drawings and installations with sentimental objects. They’ve started to explore altered meanings and coded language through objects and how they can reveal an identity or message.
While working in museums and galleries, they have developed an interest in installations, displays, objects, labels and forms, which they’ve started to explore. Collected text is often a jumping-off point in their work, through sentimental written words/notes, old object names, family phrases and lines from old-Hollywood films.
